Changing attitudes to Alcoholics Anonymous

Changing attitudes to Alcoholics Anonymous

Here is a podcast featuring Jon who has his own blog at https://jonsleeper.wordpress.com who was a longterm member of AA until about two years ago.  He feels AA helped him beat alcoholism but was also frustrated by the old fashioned religious approach in the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous.

We discuss and article in the Guardian http://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/sep/22/alcoholics-anonymous-aa-women-dating-addition-rehab?CMP=twt_gu which talks about 13 stepping in AA and why it is not suitable for all.

Great show; it’s good to hear rational voices on this.

Thanks, hopefully we can do a few more podcasts about AA. I don’t want to be agressive towards people in AA but do feel that some aspects of it do need to be discussed and you cannot do that in AA meetings. Jon is far more knowledgable about AA than me as I moved away to alternative solutions much earlier in my recovery.

Thanks Tom – and thanks Mike for having me on your podcast. One day an online community will allow rationalists seeking recovery to find sensible, non-judgemental, scientifically based, up to date secular options for sobriety. It could be an alternatives to AA, or something to do alongside AA. It doesn’t really matter. What’s important is that we find the means to talk about it in a reasonable, non-dogmatic and well informed way.

It is interesting to see what happens in the near future. I have no problem with AA existing for those who wish to be members and who find it helpful for support but I am against the 12 steps being used as medical treatment. Doctors are required to provide the best and most up to date treatment available and this does not seem to be done in the rehab world and is something that could change as a result of a lawsuit for malpractice.

Thanks Massive, it seems to be getting quite a few listeners so far so hopefully it will be worth keeping it going and getting a wide range of people on here, let me know if you fancy doing one with me.
